How to Use This Tool
Set Your Baseline
Enter your Initial Investment and how much you can save in Monthly Contributions. Be realistic—consistency beats intensity.
Choose Your Strategy
Targeting high yield (e.g. 5% yield, low growth) or dividend growth (e.g. 2% yield, high growth)? Adjust the Dividend Yield and Growth inputs to match.
Account for Reality
Set your Dividend Tax Rate (15% US default) and Inflation Rate to see what your future dollars are actually worth in today's purchasing power.
Define Success
Set your Time Horizon—10 years for a down payment or 30 for retirement. See exactly when you cross your "Financial Freedom Number."
Investing in dividend-paying stocks is one of the most effective strategies for building true, passive wealth. While thousands of stocks and ETFs exist, the disciplined investor focuses on one thing: growing their income stream.
For many, the goal isn't just a big account balance—it's financial freedom. By focusing on dividends, you are building a paycheck that can eventually cover your expenses, regardless of what the stock market price does on any given day.
Tangible Income
You get paid cash simply for owning shares. You can use this to pay bills or, ideally, reinvest it to buy more shares.
Reduced Risk
Dividend-paying companies are often mature, profitable, and defensive (think Coca-Cola or McDonald's). They reward shareholders even during downturns.
Dividend Yield vs. Dividend Growth
Dividend Yield is your starting point. If a stock costs $100 and pays $5 a year, that's a 5% yield. However, a high yield today doesn't mean much if it never grows.
Dividend Growth is the secret weapon—the "raise" the company gives you every year. A 2% yield growing at 10% per year will eventually surpass a stagnant 5% yield. This is how you beat inflation and supercharge your Yield on Cost.
The Power of DRIP (Reinvesting)
When you enable Reinvest Dividends, you're simulating a DRIP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan). Instead of taking the cash, you buy more shares. This creates a "snowball effect": More shares → More dividends → More shares.
Taxes on Dividends
Dividends are taxable income in most jurisdictions. In the US, qualified dividends are taxed at 0% for the lowest brackets, 15% for most taxpayers, and 20% for the highest earners.
This calculator applies your tax rate to all dividends before reinvestment—only the after-tax portion purchases new shares. If you hold stocks in a tax-advantaged account (Roth IRA, 401k), set the tax rate to 0%.
Inflation and Purchasing Power
Inflation erodes purchasing power over time. A portfolio worth $100,000 in 10 years won't buy as much as $100,000 today. The US historical average is roughly 3% per year.
Projections run in nominal dollars first, then discount by your inflation rate to show today's purchasing power. These appear as "Real Value" and "Real Income" in the table and the dashed chart line. Goal progress is measured in today's dollars—not inflated future ones.
Monthly contributions are held constant and not adjusted for inflation. In reality, you may increase contributions as your income grows.
Advanced Concept: The "Accumulation Paradox"
You might notice something strange: sometimes, increasing Share Price Appreciation actually lowers your future income. When you're a net buyer (contributing monthly + reinvesting dividends), you want the stock price to stay reasonable so you can accumulate more shares.
If Price Rises Higher (5%+)
Your contributions and reinvested dividends buy fewer shares. You end up with a smaller "income engine."
If Price Stays Flat
You accumulate shares rapidly. More shares × Dividend Per Share = more income.
The Takeaway: Don't just chase price appreciation. For income goals, share accumulation is king.
